Multiscale Variability of Hydrological Responses in Urbanizing Watershed

چکیده

Anthropically-induced land-use/land cover (LULC) changes create an imbalance between water and energy fluxes by affecting rainfall-runoff partitioning. This alters the catchment’s flow regime, generating increased highs reduced low flows, triggering socio-economic environmental damages. The focus of this study is two-fold (i) to quantify hydrological induced in urbanizing watershed (ii) analyze streamflow variability generation extremes (high- low-flow), using soil assessment tool (SWAT) for Peachtree Creek, USA. results indicate that change LULC significantly influences availability moisture, ET, contribution groundwater flow. It observed variations these processes regulate from surface sub-surface sources, thus extreme flows. spatio-temporal analysis, response changes, indicates urbanization affects baseflow, its depends on degree predominant land-use class subwatersheds, seasonal baseflow streams depend ET timing magnitude outflow streams. These lead excess/deficit regions, increasing susceptibility floods during heavy precipitation events reducing reliability dry periods. Thus, watershed, regime may not always be a function runoff, but will modified dynamics. Further, shows model parameters can provide insight into implications regimes. Evaluating basin balance paramount deriving any management operations restoration activities. also outlines significance analyzing spatial temporal scale managing resources reduce damage lives properties.

Evaluation of Impervious Surface Estimates in a Rapidly Urbanizing Watershed

Accurate measurement of impervious surface (IS) cover is an essential indicator of downstream water quality and a critical input variable for many water quality and quantity models. This study compares IS estimates from a recently developed satellite imagery/land cover approach with a more traditional aerial photography/land use approach. Both approaches are evaluated against a high-quality val...

Spatial interactions among ecosystem services in an urbanizing agricultural watershed.

Understanding spatial distributions, synergies, and tradeoffs of multiple ecosystem services (benefits people derive from ecosystems) remains challenging. We analyzed the supply of 10 ecosystem services for 2006 across a large urbanizing agricultural watershed in the Upper Midwest of the United States, and asked the following: (i) Where are areas of high and low supply of individual ecosystem s...

Effects of stream restoration on denitrification in an urbanizing watershed.

Increased delivery of nitrogen due to urbanization and stream ecosystem degradation is contributing to eutrophication in coastal regions of the eastern United States. We tested whether geomorphic restoration involving hydrologic "reconnection" of a stream to its floodplain could increase rates of denitrification at the riparian-zone-stream interface of an urban stream in Baltimore, Maryland. Ra...

Watershed-Scale Hydrological Modeling Methods and Applications

Pollution of surface water with harmful chemicals and eutrophication of rivers and lakes with excess nutrients are serious environmental concerns. The U.S. Environmental Protec‐ tion Agency (USEPA) estimated that 53% of the 27% assessed rivers and streams miles and 69% of the 45% assessed lakes, ponds, and reservoirs acreage in the nation are impaired (USEPA, 2010). In Mississippi, 57% of the 5...
